FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How difficult is gorilla trekking?
A: It varies greatly depending on where the gorillas are. Treks can be 30 minutes to 6+ hours on steep, muddy terrain at altitude (2,500m). Moderate fitness is required, but you can go at your own pace. Porters are available to help carry bags and assist you.
Q: What’s the gorilla sighting success rate?
A: Over 98%. Trackers locate gorilla families before your trek begins, so sightings are almost guaranteed. In the rare event gorillas aren’t found, you would receive a refund or be able to trek another day.
Q: Can older adults do gorilla trekking?
A: Yes! We’ve guided trekkers into their 70s. The key is reasonable fitness and using a porter. You can rest as often as needed during the trek.
Q: Is it safe?
A: Very safe. Experienced park rangers and armed guards accompany all treks. Mountain gorillas are habituated to humans and are generally peaceful. You must maintain 7 meters distance.
Q: What if I have a cold on trek day?
A: You will not be permitted to trek (to protect the gorillas). Your permit may be rescheduled if possible, but refunds are not guaranteed. This is why travel insurance is essential.
Q: How close do you get to gorillas?
A: Official rules require 7 meters (23 feet), but gorillas often approach closer. You must stand still and let them move around you.
Q: Can I trek if I’m not very fit?
A: Basic fitness is required. Discuss your fitness level honestly when booking. Shorter treks can sometimes be arranged, and porters significantly help. Walking uphill for 2-3 hours should be manageable.
Q: When should I book?
A: As early as possible. Gorilla permits are limited (only 96 available per day for all of Rwanda) and sell out months in advance, especially during peak season (June-September, December-February).

Your Rwanda primate adventure begins in Kigali, where your professional safari guide meets you at the airport or your hotel. After introductions and a safari briefing, your journey south begins.
The Drive to Nyungwe:

Arrive at Nyungwe Forest in the late afternoon. This ancient montane rainforest is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse, home to 13 primate species, 300+ bird species, and over 1,000 plant species. DAY 2: CHIMPANZEE TRACKING & TRANSFER TO LAKE KIVU

Wake before dawn for one of Africa’s most exhilarating wildlife experiences – tracking wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
Morning: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe
Timeline:
- 5:00 AM – Early breakfast
- 5:30 AM – Depart for Uwinka Visitor Center
- 6:00 AM – Registration and briefing
- 6:30 AM – Trek begins into the forest
Nyungwe’s chimpanzee population (estimated 500+ individuals) is distributed across several habituated groups. Your experienced tracker and guide lead you through the misty rainforest, following calls, nests, and signs of chimpanzee activity.
The Chimpanzee Experience:
When you locate the chimps, the experience is thrilling but very different from gorilla trekking. Chimpanzees are incredibly active – swinging through the canopy, feeding, playing, grooming, and vocalizing with their distinctive pant-hoots that echo through the forest. You’ll spend one hour observing these intelligent primates, though they’re often high in the trees, making photography challenging but rewarding.
What Makes It Special:
- Observe complex social behaviors
- Hear their loud vocalizations
- Watch them use tools to extract insects
- See mothers with babies clinging to their backs
- Experience the biodiversity of an ancient rainforest
Along the trek, you’ll also likely encounter other primates including L’Hoest’s monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, silver monkeys, or spectacular troops of 300+ Angolan colobus monkeys.
Optional Activity: Canopy Walk
If time permits and energy levels allow, take the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk – a 160-meter suspension bridge suspended 50 meters above the forest floor. This thrilling walkway offers a bird’s-eye perspective of the rainforest and is one of only three canopy walks in East Africa.
Cost: Additional $60 per person
Duration: 2 hours including forest walk
Afternoon: Drive to Lake Kivu
After lunch back at the hotel, continue your journey to Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes and Rwanda’s largest lake. The 2-hour drive descends from the mountains through changing vegetation zones until you reach the peaceful shores.
Lake Kivu:
This beautiful freshwater lake borders the Democratic Republic of Congo and offers a relaxing contrast to the intense trekking experiences. The afternoon is yours to unwind, swim (bilharzia-free!), or simply enjoy the sunset over the water.

Begin with an early morning boat cruise on the tranquil waters of Lake Kivu. Visit Napoleon Island, home to a large fruit bat colony, and observe local fishermen heading out in their traditional wooden boats. The morning light on the water, with mist rising and the distant hills of Congo visible across the lake, creates unforgettable photo opportunities.
Cruise Details:
- Duration: 1.5-2 hours
- Departure: 6:30 AM
- Highlights: Napoleon Island, fishing villages, bird watching
- Coffee/tea served on board
Journey to Volcanoes National Park:
After breakfast and checkout, drive north through Rwanda’s stunning landscape. The route takes you through Gisenyi (on Lake Kivu’s northern shore) before turning inland toward Musanze (Ruhengeri) and the volcanic mountains that form the border with Uganda and Congo.
As you approach the park, the landscape transforms dramatically – five volcanic peaks rise from the surrounding plains, their slopes covered in thick bamboo and rainforest. This is the legendary Virunga Massif, home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
Afternoon: Gorilla Guardians Village
After checking into your lodge, visit the Gorilla Guardians Village (formerly Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village). This award-winning community project was established by reformed poachers who now work in gorilla conservation and tourism.
Cultural Experiences Include:
- Traditional Intore dancing performances

The Gorilla Trek:
Volcanoes National Park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families available for tourism, each with its own territory and personality. Groups are limited to 8 visitors per family per day, ensuring an intimate and low-impact experience.
Your trek begins where the cultivated land meets the national park boundary. Led by experienced trackers and armed park rangers, you’ll hike through farmland, bamboo forests, and dense rainforest vegetation. The terrain is steep and often muddy, but the anticipation builds with every step.
Trackers who left at dawn to locate the gorillas radio their position to your guides. Once the gorillas are found, the final approach is made carefully and quietly.
The Gorilla Encounter:
Nothing can truly prepare you for the moment you first lock eyes with a mountain gorilla in the wild. These magnificent creatures – the silverback weighing up to 200kg, mothers cradling infants, juveniles playing and tumbling – go about their daily routines seemingly oblivious to your presence.
You’ll spend one precious hour observing and photographing as the family feeds, rests, grooms, and interacts. Baby gorillas are irresistibly playful, mothers are protective and attentive, and the silverback maintains his watchful leadership. The experience is profoundly moving and consistently described as life-changing.
Gorilla Families You Might Visit:
- Susa Group – Largest family, made famous by Dian Fossey
- Sabyinyo Group – Known for twin babies
- Amahoro Group – “Peaceful” family with gentle silverback
- Ugenda Group – “Mobile” family, always on the move
- And 8 others, each unique
After the Trek:
Return to the park headquarters where you’ll receive a certificate commemorating your gorilla trekking experience. Back at the lodge, celebrate with lunch and rest before the afternoon activity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How does this compare to the 3-day tour?
A: This 5-day tour adds chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest, Lake Kivu relaxation, cultural experiences, and more comprehensive Rwanda exploration. It’s ideal if you have more time and want both gorilla and chimp encounters.
Q: Is chimpanzee tracking as good as gorilla trekking?
A: Different but equally amazing! Chimps are more active and acrobatic, often high in trees. Gorillas are more placid and you get closer. Both are incredible experiences, and seeing both provides complete primate diversity.
Q: Can I do both treks if I’m not super fit?
A: Good fitness is important for multiple trekking days. The treks are on consecutive days, so you need to be able to handle back-to-back physical activity. Porters help significantly. Discuss your fitness level honestly when booking.
Q: What’s the chimpanzee sighting success rate?
A: Around 90-95% in Nyungwe. Slightly lower than gorillas because chimps are more mobile and sometimes range far. Even if sightings are difficult, the forest experience itself is spectacular.
Q: How cold is it in the mountains?
A: Early mornings at 2,000-2,500m altitude can be 10-15°C (50-60°F). During treks you’ll warm up quickly. Evenings at lodges can be cool. Pack layers.
Q: Is Lake Kivu safe for swimming?
A: Yes! Unlike most African lakes, Kivu is bilharzia-free and safe for swimming. The water is refreshing and clean.
Q: Can I extend this to include golden monkeys?
A: Absolutely! Golden monkey tracking can be added for an additional day and permit cost ($100). Ask about our 7-day itinerary which includes all three primates.
Q: What if weather cancels an activity?
A: Primate tracking happens rain or shine (gorillas don’t mind rain!). Other activities might be adjusted for safety, but rarely canceled completely.

Kigali City Orientation Tour:
Though Kigali is a modern, clean city, it carries profound historical significance. Your introduction includes:
Kigali Genocide Memorial, Gisozi
A moving and important visit to understand Rwanda’s tragic history and remarkable recovery. The memorial honors the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and provides context for understanding modern Rwanda’s reconciliation and development. This powerful experience sets the stage for appreciating Rwanda’s conservation achievements and national unity.
Duration: 1.5-2 hours
Note: This is an emotional but essential visit. Photography restricted in certain areas.
Kimironko Market
Experience the vibrant heart of Kigali life at this bustling local market. Browse colorful displays of fresh produce, traditional crafts, fabrics, and spices. It’s a sensory feast and perfect opportunity to interact with friendly vendors and pick up authentic souvenirs.
Journey to Volcanoes National Park:
After lunch in Kigali, drive northwest toward Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri). The scenic 2.5-hour journey takes you through Rwanda’s famous terraced hillsides, past roadside markets, and through rural villages. DAY 2: MOUNTAIN GORILLA TREKKING & DIAN FOSSEY CAMPUS
Meals: B, L, D | Trek: 2-6 hours
The day you’ve been dreaming of – face-to-face with mountain gorillas!
Morning: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Pre-Trek Preparation:
- 6:00 AM – Early breakfast (or packed option)
- Pack your daypack with essentials
- Dress in layers (mornings are cool)
- Apply insect repellent and sunscreen
Timeline:
- 7:00 AM – Transfer to Volcanoes NP headquarters, Kinigi
- 7:30 AM – Coffee, registration, and restrooms
- 8:00 AM – Briefing from Rwanda Development Board officials
- Learn gorilla etiquette and safety guidelines
- Assignment to one of 12 gorilla families
- Meet your tracking team (guide, ranger, porters)
- 8:45 AM – Transfer to trailhead (if needed)
- 9:00 AM – Trek begins
The Gorilla Trek Experience:
Led by experienced trackers and armed park rangers, your journey into gorilla habitat begins where farmland meets the park boundary. The trek takes you through multiple vegetation zones – from farmland to bamboo forests to thick hagenia woodland.
Terrain: Steep, often muddy, at altitude (2,500-3,000m)
Duration: Highly variable (30 minutes to 6+ hours)
Difficulty: Depends entirely on where gorillas spent the previous night
What Determines Trek Length:
- Gorilla family location (tracked from 6am)
- Weather conditions
- Recent gorilla movements
- Terrain and vegetation density
Trackers who left at dawn radio the gorillas’ location to your guides. As you get closer, the pace slows and excitement builds. Finally, you push through the final vegetation barrier and there they are…
The Gorilla Encounter:
Words cannot adequately capture the moment you first see a mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat. The massive silverback, weighing up to 200kg, sits calmly as his family feeds around him. Mothers cradle infants, juveniles wrestle and tumble, and curious youngsters may approach within meters of where you sit.
Your Precious Hour:
- Observe natural behaviors – feeding, grooming, playing, resting
- Watch complex family dynamics
- See baby gorillas (absolutely adorable)
- Photograph these gentle giants (no flash!)
- Simply be present in this magical moment
Gorilla Families You Might Visit:
- Susa Group: Largest family (28+ members), famous from Dian Fossey’s research
- Sabyinyo Group: Known for playful twins
- Amahoro Group: “Peaceful” family with gentle silverback
- Ugenda Group: Most mobile family
- Kwitonda Group: Large family that migrated from Congo
- And 7 others, each with unique characteristics
Important Rules:
- Maintain 7 meters distance (gorillas may come closer to you)
- Wear face masks (provided)
- No eating/drinking near gorillas
- No flash photography
- Speak in whispers
- If a gorilla charges, crouch down and look away
- One hour maximum with gorillas
After the Trek:
Return to park headquarters where you’ll receive a certificate commemorating your gorilla trekking achievement. Back at the lodge, celebrate with lunch while sharing stories with fellow trekkers.
Afternoon: Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund
After resting and refreshing, visit this world-class conservation facility that honors the legacy of Dian Fossey, the American primatologist who dedicated her life to saving mountain gorillas.
What You’ll Experience:
- Interactive exhibits about gorilla conservation
- Artifacts from Fossey’s original Karisoke Research Center
- Educational displays about gorilla behavior and ecology
- Conservation programs – how tourism saves gorillas
- Meet researchers (sometimes) working on current projects
- Gift shop with proceeds supporting conservation
Why It Matters:
When Dian Fossey began her work in 1967, fewer than 250 mountain gorillas remained. Thanks to her pioneering efforts and continued conservation work, the population has grown to over 1,000 today – the only great ape population that’s increasing. Your visit and gorilla permit directly fund this conservation success story.
Timeline:
- Return from trek (varies, typically 11am-2pm)
- Lunch and rest at lodge
- 4:00 PM – Visit Ellen DeGeneres Campus
- 6:00 PM – Return to lodge
- 7:00 PM – Leisure time
- 7:30 PM – Dinner
Accommodation: DaVinci Gorilla Lodge
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Trek Difficulty: Moderate to very challenging
DAY 3: GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING & TRANSFER TO LAKE KIVU
Distance to Lake Kivu: 120km | 3.5 hours | Meals: B, L, D
Morning: Golden Monkey Tracking
After yesterday’s gorilla encounter, today you’ll track a completely different but equally fascinating primate – the endangered golden monkey.
About Golden Monkeys:
- Subspecies of the blue monkey, endemic to Albertine Rift
- Distinctive gold-orange patches on back and flanks
- Live in bamboo forests at 2,500-3,500m altitude
- Highly endangered (estimated 3,000-4,000 remaining)
- Fast-moving and acrobatic
Timeline:
- 6:00 AM – Early breakfast
- 6:30 AM – Transfer to park headquarters
- 7:00 AM – Briefing and group assignment
- 7:30 AM – Trek begins
The Golden Monkey Experience:
Golden monkeys offer a very different experience from gorillas. These primates are constantly on the move – leaping through bamboo, playing, foraging for bamboo shoots, and vocalizing. The trek typically takes 2-4 hours and happens in the bamboo zone on the lower slopes of the volcanoes.
What to Expect:
- Faster-paced than gorilla tracking
- Monkeys often high in bamboo canopy
- Very active and playful behavior
- Photography more challenging (fast-moving subjects)
- Beautiful bamboo forest environment
- Troops can number 60-100 individuals
The golden monkeys’ acrobatic antics – jumping from bamboo stalk to bamboo stalk, babies clinging to mothers, juveniles playing – create wonderful photo opportunities (though you’ll need fast shutter speeds!). The hour with these rare primates passes quickly as you watch their fascinating social dynamics.
Transfer to Lake Kivu:
After the trek, return to the lodge for checkout and lunch before departing for Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest lake and one of Africa’s Great Lakes.
The Journey:
The 3.5-hour drive west takes you through changing landscapes – from volcanic mountains through rolling hills and eventually to the shores of this vast, beautiful lake. Pass through Gisenyi (Rubavu), a lakeside town on the Congo border, before reaching your destination in Karongi.
Lake Kivu:
This stunning freshwater lake stretches 90km along Rwanda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike most African lakes, it’s safe for swimming (bilharzia-free) and offers a perfect setting for relaxation after several days of trekking.
Afternoon:
Arrive at your lakefront lodge with time to:
- Swim in the clear waters
- Kayak along the shore
- Simply relax with a drink and lake views
- Watch the sunset over the water
- Enjoy the peaceful ambiance
Timeline:
- 6:00 AM – Breakfast
- 6:30 AM – Depart for golden monkey tracking
- 7:30 AM – Trek begins
- 11:00 AM – Return from trek
- 12:00 PM – Lunch and checkout
- 1:00 PM – Depart for Lake Kivu
- 4:30 PM – Arrive Cormoran Lodge
- Afternoon at leisure – swimming, kayaking, relaxing
- 7:30 PM – Dinner
Accommodation: Cormoran Lodge ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Location: Directly on Lake Kivu shore, Karongi
- Room type: Lake-view rooms with private balconies
- Amenities: Pool, water sports, beach, restaurant, bar
- Setting: Tropical gardens with direct lake access
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
DAY 4: LAKE KIVU TO NYUNGWE FOREST – CANOPY WALK
Distance: 90km | 2.5 hours | Meals: B, L, D
Morning: Leisure at Lake Kivu
Wake to the gentle sounds of water lapping the shore and birds calling across the lake. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast on the terrace overlooking the water.
Optional Morning Activity:
- Boat cruise to nearby islands
- Coffee plantation tour
- Swim and relax by the lake
- Kayaking along the peaceful shores
Journey to Nyungwe Forest:
After checkout, drive south along the lake shore before turning inland toward Nyungwe Forest National Park. The journey takes you through different vegetation zones, past tea plantations covering hillsides in neat geometric patterns, and through small towns where daily life unfolds.
About Nyungwe Forest:
Nyungwe is one of Africa’s most ancient and biodiverse montane rainforests:
- Size: 1,019 square kilometers
- Age: Estimated 10,000+ years old
- Altitude: 1,600m to 2,950m
- Biodiversity: 13 primate species, 300+ bird species, 1,068 plant species
- Status: One of East Africa’s last remaining large rainforests
Afternoon: Nyungwe Canopy Walk
After settling into your lodge and having lunch, experience one of East Africa’s most thrilling activities – the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway.
The Canopy Walk Experience:
- Height: 50 meters (160 feet) above the forest floor
- Length: 160 meters suspended bridge
- Duration: 2 hours including approach trail
- Views: 360-degree panorama over forest canopy
- Wildlife: Birds, primates, butterflies from unique perspective
The Experience:
A 30-minute forest walk brings you to the canopy walkway. As you step onto the suspended bridge, the forest floor drops away beneath your feet. Walk slowly across, stopping frequently to observe:
- Forest canopy from a bird’s eye view
- Troops of monkeys moving through the treetops
- Colorful birds flying at eye level
- The vast expanse of ancient forest stretching to the horizon
- Butterflies dancing on air currents
The gentle swaying of the bridge adds to the adventure, and the views are absolutely spectacular – especially in afternoon light when the forest glows golden-green.
Why It’s Special:
This is one of only three canopy walks in East Africa and offers a completely unique perspective on rainforest ecology. You’re literally walking through the canopy layer where most forest life actually happens.
Timeline:
- 7:00 AM – Leisurely breakfast
- 8:00 AM – Optional boat cruise OR relax at lodge
- 10:00 AM – Check out
- 10:30 AM – Depart for Nyungwe

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
DAY 5: CHIMPANZEE TRACKING & NYUNGWE CULTURAL VILLAGE
Meals: B, L, D | Trek: 3-5 hours
Morning: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest
Wake before dawn for one of Africa’s most exhilarating primate experiences – tracking wild chimpanzees in their natural rainforest habitat.
Pre-Trek Preparation:
- 5:00 AM – Very early breakfast
- Pack rain gear (forest creates own weather)
- Wear waterproof hiking boots
- Long sleeves/pants (vegetation is thick)
Timeline:
- 5:30 AM – Depart lodge
- 5:50 AM – Arrive Uwinka Visitor Center
- 6:00 AM – Registration and chimp tracking briefing
- 6:30 AM – Trek begins into the forest
About Nyungwe’s Chimpanzees:
- Population: 500+ individuals
- Groups: Several habituated communities
- Behavior: Highly active, vocal, social
- Challenge: They’re constantly moving and often high in canopy
The Chimpanzee Trek:
Following your experienced tracker and guide, hike into the misty rainforest. The trek involves:
- Navigating steep, muddy trails
- Pushing through thick vegetation
- Crossing small streams
- Listening for chimp vocalizations (pant-hoots, screams)
- Following signs (nests, feeding sites, droppings)
The Sound of Chimpanzees:
You’ll often hear chimps before seeing them. Their vocalizations echo through the forest:
- Pant-hooting: Long-distance communication
- Screaming: Excitement or alarm
- Drumming: Males drum on buttress roots
- Food grunts: Contentment while feeding
The Chimpanzee Encounter:
When you locate the chimps, the experience is thrilling and energetic – completely different from the relatively calm gorilla encounter. Chimpanzees are incredibly active:
- Swinging through the canopy
- Playing and wrestling
- Grooming each other (important social bonding)
- Using tools to extract insects from logs
- Foraging for fruits and leaves
- Displaying (males showing dominance)
Observation Time: One hour once chimps are located
What Makes It Challenging:
- Chimps rarely stay still
- Often high in trees (60+ feet up)
- Can move quickly through forest
- Photography requires patience and skill
- Neck strain from looking up!
Why It’s Worth It:
Despite the challenges, seeing our closest living relatives (we share 98.7% DNA) in the wild is profound. Their intelligence, complex social structures, and expressive faces create an unforgettable experience.
Bonus Wildlife:
During your trek, you’ll likely encounter other primates:
- Ruwenzori colobus (Angola colobus) – troops of 300+
- L’Hoest’s monkeys – distinctive white beards
- Red-tailed monkeys
- Blue monkeys
- Silver monkeys
Plus incredible birds, butterflies, and unique plants in this ancient forest.
Afternoon: Nyungwe Cultural Village
After returning to the lodge for lunch and rest, visit the Nyungwe Cultural Village (Banda Village) for an immersive cultural experience.
Cultural Activities:
- Traditional dance performances (Intore dancing)
- Drumming demonstrations
- Craft-making workshops (basket weaving, pottery)
- Traditional home visits
- Banana beer brewing demonstration
- Local cuisine preparation and tasting
- Story-telling from village elders
- Traditional medicine with local healer
Community Impact:
This village tourism project provides alternative livelihoods to communities bordering the national park, reducing pressure on forest resources and creating conservation allies.
Timeline:
- 5:00 AM – Early breakfast
- 5:30 AM – Depart for Uwinka
- 6:30 AM – Chimp trek begins
- Return varies (9am-12pm depending on chimp location)
- 12:30 PM – Lunch at lodge
- 2:00 PM – Rest time
- 4:00 PM – Nyungwe Cultural Village visit
- 6:30 PM – Return to lodge
- 7:30 PM – Dinner
Accommodation: Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Trek Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
DAY 6: COLOBUS MONKEY TRACKING & TO LAKE KIVU (EMERAUDE)
Distance to Gisakura: 30km | 1 hour | Meals: B, L, D
Morning: Colobus Monkey Tracking
Today’s primate encounter is gentler than previous treks – perfect for your second-to-last day when energy might be waning.
About Angolan Colobus Monkeys:
- Also called Ruwenzori colobus
- Striking black and white coloration
- Long white “cape” and tail
- Live in massive troops (up to 400 individuals!)
- Leaf-eaters (folivores)
- Nyungwe has one of Africa’s largest populations
The Colobus Trek:
This is more of a guided nature walk than a challenging trek:
- Duration: 2-3 hours
- Terrain: Relatively gentle through tea plantations and forest edge
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Setting: Beautiful tea estate with forest patches
Timeline:
- 7:00 AM – Breakfast
- 8:00 AM – Depart for colobus tracking area
- 8:30 AM – Trek begins through tea plantations
- Walk through scenic estates to forest patch
- Locate massive colobus troops
The Colobus Experience:
Unlike the highly active chimps or rare gorillas, colobus monkeys are relatively easy to observe. These beautiful primates:
- Often rest in large groups
- Make spectacular leaps between trees (up to 15 meters!)
- Are very photogenic (black and white contrast)
- Vocalize with interesting calls
- Feed on leaves and flowers
What Makes It Special:
Seeing a troop of 100+ black and white colobus monkeys against the green forest is visually stunning. They’re less shy than other primates and often allow close observation. The setting – walking through emerald tea plantations with forest-covered mountains in the background – is gorgeous.
Transfer to Emeraude Kivu Resort:
After the trek, drive approximately one hour to the shores of Lake Kivu, checking into the beautiful Emeraude Kivu Resort at Gisakura.
Why This Location:
Emeraude is positioned on a quiet, pristine section of Lake Kivu, offering a more secluded and luxurious lakeside experience than the previous Lake Kivu stop.
Afternoon & Evening: Relaxation at Lake Kivu
Your final full day deserves some pampering:
- Swimming in the lake
- Sunbathing on the beach
- Massage treatments (available at resort)
- Kayaking or paddleboarding

DAY 7: RETURN TO KIGALI VIA KING’S PALACE & DEPARTURE
Distance: 225km | 5 hours with stops | Meals: B, L
Your final day – departing Nyungwe’s forests for Kigali and your homeward journey.
Morning: Farewell to Lake Kivu
- 6:30 AM – Optional early morning walk along the lake
- 7:30 AM – Leisurely breakfast on the terrace
- 9:00 AM – Checkout and departure
Journey Back to Kigali:
The drive back to the capital takes approximately 5 hours with stops, traveling through the heart of Rwanda’s beautiful countryside.
Cultural Stop: King’s Palace Museum, Nyanza
Timeline: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Located in Nyanza, the traditional seat of Rwanda’s monarchy, the King’s Palace (Rukari) is a meticulously reconstructed royal residence offering insights into Rwandan history and culture.
What You’ll See:
- Traditional Palace – Reconstructed thatched dome (Ubwehekerezi style)
- Modern Palace – 1930s royal residence
- Royal Inyambo Cattle – Spectacular long-horned cattle bred for the king
- Exhibits about Rwanda’s monarchy and colonial period
- Royal regalia and artifacts
- Traditional court ceremonies demonstrations (sometimes)
Why It’s Significant:
Understanding Rwanda’s monarchical history provides context for the country’s cultural traditions and pre-colonial social structures. The contrast between traditional architecture and the modern palace illustrates Rwanda’s historical transitions.
The Inyambo Cattle:
These magnificent cattle, with horns up to 2.5 meters long, were bred exclusively for Rwanda’s king. They were trained to respond to songs and paraded during royal ceremonies. Seeing them is a highlight for many visitors.

- Best for: First-time visitors, photographers, those wanting optimal conditions
December to February
- Pros: Warm and dry, good visibility, festive season atmosphere
- Cons: Holiday period pricing, advance booking essential
- Best for: Christmas/New Year travelers, avoiding European summer crowds
Wet Seasons (Budget-Conscious):
March to May (Long Rains)
- Pros: Fewer tourists, lush scenery, sometimes lower prices, amazing photography (when it’s not raining)
- Cons: Heavy rains, very muddy trails, some roads challenging, leeches more common
- Best for: Experienced trekkers, those on flexible schedules, budget travelers
October to November (Short Rains)
- Pros: Beautiful green landscapes, fewer crowds, generally lighter rain than March-May
- Cons: Afternoon showers common, trails can be slippery
- Best for: Those seeking a balance between conditions and crowds

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Is this trip too physically demanding?
A: This is our most physically challenging itinerary with 4 primate treks over 5 days. You need good fitness, but you don’t need to be an athlete. If you can hike uphill for 2-3 hours and handle consecutive days of activity, you’ll be fine. Porters help significantly. We’ve guided fit 65-year-olds successfully on this trip.
Q: How does this compare to the 3-day and 5-day tours?
A: This is the comprehensive experience. The 3-day focuses only on gorillas and golden monkeys in Volcanoes. The 5-day adds chimps and Lake Kivu. This 7-day includes all three major primates (gorillas, chimps, golden monkeys) plus colobus, canopy walk, cultural experiences, and both relaxation and wildlife. It’s for those who want the complete Rwanda experience.
Q: What’s the success rate for seeing all the primates?
A:
- Gorillas: 98-99% (almost guaranteed)
- Golden monkeys: 95%+
- Chimpanzees: 90-95% (sometimes just hear them)
- Colobus monkeys: 99%+ (almost guaranteed)
Q: Can older adults do this trip?
A: Yes, with caveats. We’ve successfully guided travelers into their late 60s. The keys are: reasonable fitness for your age, use of porters, going at your own pace, and honest assessment of capabilities. The colobus trek is gentle. If concerned, consider the 5-day tour which has one fewer trek.
Q: What if I can’t find the chimps or they’re too high to see well?
A: Chimp tracking has about 90-95% success rate. Sometimes they’re far away or very high in the canopy. Even when sightings are difficult, the rainforest experience itself is spectacular, and you’ll see other primates. No refunds for difficult sightings, which is why travel insurance is important.
Q: How muddy does it get?
A: Very muddy, especially in wet season. Even in dry season, expect mud. This is rainforest and mountain environment. Proper waterproof boots and gaiters are essential. The mud is part of the authentic experience!
Q: Is there a weight limit for trekking?
A: No official limit, but extreme obesity can make trekking very difficult and potentially dangerous at altitude on steep terrain. Be honest about your fitness level when booking.
Q: Can I do the trip if I have asthma/other conditions?
A: Many conditions are manageable with proper medication and precautions. Discuss honestly with your doctor and us when booking. Altitude (up to 3,000m) can affect breathing. You must not trek if you have a contagious illness (to protect the primates).
Q: What if it rains during treks?
A: Trekking happens rain or shine. Gorillas, chimps, and monkeys are active in rain (actually, it’s great for trekking as trails are quieter and animals are more active). Proper rain gear makes it manageable.
Q: How close do you get to each primate?
- Gorillas: 7 meters official rule (often closer as they approach you)
- Golden monkeys: Usually 5-10 meters in bamboo
- Chimpanzees: Often 20-50+ meters (high in canopy), sometimes closer
- Colobus: Variable, often quite close (10-20 meters)
Q: Is Wi-Fi available?
A: DaVinci Gorilla Lodge and Emeraude Kivu have Wi-Fi. Other lodges have limited or no connectivity. Nyungwe Forest has no cell signal. Embrace the digital detox!
Q: Can I charge my devices?
A: Yes, all lodges have electricity (though Nyungwe’s is limited in evenings). Bring a power bank for long trekking days. Rwanda uses 230V with Type C/J plugs (European standard).
Q: What about dietary restrictions?
A: Lodges can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and most dietary restrictions with advance notice. Inform us when booking. Options are more limited in remote areas.
Q: Is tipping expected?
A: Yes, tipping is customary in Rwanda:
- Safari guide: $10-15 per person per day
- Gorilla trackers/rangers: $10-20 per person per trek
- Porters: $15-20 per trek
- Lodge staff: $5-10 per day total
- Cultural performers: $5-10 per group
Q: Can I extend the trip?
A: Absolutely! Popular extensions:
- Extra gorilla trek ($1,500 permit)
- Akagera National Park (Big Five safari)
- Combine with Uganda (more gorillas, chimps, savanna safari)
- Extra days at Lake Kivu for relaxation
- Contact us for custom extensions
Q: What if I get sick during the trip?
A: Our guides carry first aid and have emergency protocols. We can arrange doctor visits in towns. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for medical emergencies. If you become ill before a trek, you cannot participate (to protect primates), and permits are non-refundable.
Q: Is Rwanda really safe?
A: Yes. Rwanda is one of Africa’s safest countries with very low crime rates. Tourist areas are particularly safe. The biggest “danger” is aggressive souvenir sellers in Kigali markets!

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “The trip of a lifetime – beyond expectations!”
“We did the full 7-day primate safari and it was absolutely incredible. Seeing gorillas, chimps, golden monkeys, and colobus all in one week was a dream come true. Our guide was phenomenal – knowledgeable, patient, and made everything seamless. The accommodations were great, especially the final night at Emeraude which was stunning. Yes, the trekking is challenging, but SO worth it. I cried meeting the gorillas. Already planning to return!”
– Rachel & Tom Morrison, Canada (August 2024)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Perfect for serious wildlife enthusiasts”
“As a wildlife photographer, this was exactly what I wanted. Four different primate species, diverse habitats, excellent guides who understood photography needs. The chimp tracking was harder than expected but amazing when we found them. Gorillas were mind-blowing. Golden monkeys were so playful. Colobus troops were huge! The canopy walk added a unique perspective. Highly recommend for anyone serious about primates.”
– James Chen, Singapore (October 2024)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Challenging but absolutely manageable”
“I’m 58 and was worried about the physical demands, but with porters helping, it was totally doable. The key is going at your own pace and not being afraid to use porter support. Every single primate encounter was special. The cultural experiences added wonderful depth. Rwanda is beautiful, safe, and welcoming. Our guide was patient with my slower pace and made sure I got the full experience. Don’t let age hold you back!”
– Margaret Williams, UK (June 2024)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Best honeymoon ever!”
“We chose this for our honeymoon and it was perfection. The mix of adventure, wildlife, culture, and relaxation at Lake Kivu was ideal. Sharing the gorilla experience with my husband was so emotional and bonding. The lodges were romantic (especially Emeraude), the food was excellent, and our guide gave us space when we wanted it. Already recommending to all our friends. Absolutely magical week.”
– Sarah & Michael, USA (February 2024)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Comprehensive and well-organized”
“Every detail was handled perfectly. Permits sorted, accommodations excellent, timing well-paced. The variety of primates and experiences made this feel like a complete exploration of Rwanda. Seeing different ecosystems – volcanic mountains, rainforest, lake – was fascinating. The cultural components added important context. This is the tour to book if you want to truly understand Rwanda’s wildlife and conservation story. Outstanding value for what’s included.”
– Hans Mueller, Germany (September 2024)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Worth every penny and every muddy step!”
“Yes, it’s expensive. Yes, it’s muddy. Yes, it’s physically demanding. And yes, it’s 100% worth it! This was the most incredible week of my life. Four different primate species, each encounter unique and special. The forests are pristine and beautiful. Rwanda is impressively clean and organized. Our guide was fantastic. The other travelers in our group became friends. I’m already saving to do this again and maybe add Uganda. Don’t hesitate – book this trip!”
